Personal Review From Customer (Unbiased)

It was a tape drive, and after the initial infatuation with the new toy, I found I never used it. The recording was a task (juggling tapes and batteries), the load was tedious, and the quality was not so good. For a quick ad hoc recordings, my various digital cameras can take a few seconds of video good enough. The camcorder disappeared from my life.

A few years later, things have changed. I received the Everio GZ-HM200, broke in a couple of 8 GB SD card, battery charged, and I was ready to go. We did a day trip to Mount Rainier, the weather was perfect, and I took a lot of video of glaciers and waterfalls photogenic.

When I got home, I wanted to upload the video on my computer. The Everio comes with software for Windows PCs, Mac users are barely mentioned in the documentation. I had searched various online video discussions of Mac, and there were many cautionary tales about the problems of compatibility with the Everio. I expected problems.

I was wrong. I connected the USB cable to my Mac Mini, began to iMovie (part of iLife '09), and opened the camcorder. The USB menu open, and I chose the "Upload" option. iMovie detects the camera, I asked a few questions (video quality, destination, whether to check for problems of stabilization), and then import the video clips. It was trivially easy - just the way I like.

The Everio has a "snapshot" mode to take still images, and that he had tried. This meant that while I was working with iMovie, iPhoto launched and offered to import the photos he had taken. My verdict: It's OK to use 1x casual, but can not replace a real digital camera. The problem is that the Everio autostabilization mode only works for video, not still images. This means that a pair of 20x magnified images, while impressively wide, confusing without hope. I'll stick with my Panasonic DMC-TZ4 still images.

The JVC Everio is a terrific little camera: compact, lightweight, easy, and excellent HD video production. (Yes, my Mac Mini feels a little underpowered to work with this.) Designing dual SD card slot is great, the camera automatically switches from one card to another during the recording, and you can swap cards on the up. XP mode (17 Mbps VBR 1920x1080) 16 GB is good for 2 hours of recording, which feels about right. (You can put up to 24 Mbps, giving you 1 hr 20 min.., Or down to 5 Mbps, when you can run for more than 7 hours!) No more juggling the media ... ..

There are plenty of additional features in this camera, and at some point I may try. However, the basic work of plug-and-play HD video, this is hard to beat.

Recommends.
